Former South African Police Service (SAPS) Special Task Force member Matipandile Sotheni is expected back in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He faces sixteen charges, including murder and conspiracy to commit murder linked to the killing of Marius van der Merwe, known as Witness D at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Van der Merwe was killed in a drive-by shooting outside his Brakpan home in December last year. During his previous appearance, the state indicated that three cellphones were found on a catwalk behind Sotheni’s cell during a search at the correctional facility. One of the devices was allegedly linked directly to Sotheni. Preliminary investigations suggest he had communicated with someone outside the facility. The state requested additional time to finalise its investigation. Prosecutors are expected to update the court on this, including forensic cellphone mapping and the analysis of devices allegedly linked to Sotheni. -Reporting by Culvin Mabasa VIDEO | Matipandile Sotheni case postponed to the 2nd of November 2026:
