The Gauteng Provincial Government says it will ensure that the next City of Johannesburg administration honours the newly signed agreement between the City and the South African Municipal Workers’ Union ( SAMWU). The agreement seeks to resolve long-standing salary disparities arising from a two-tier salary structure, which has seen some municipal workers paid on a Grade 8 scale while senior officials are on a Grade 10 scale. Gauteng Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC Jacob Mamabolo says the provincial government, together with the national government, will work with the incoming administration to ensure continuity and prevent instability in the city. He says bringing affected employees onto the Grade 10 scale is critical to improving staff morale, governance and service delivery . “This is quite critical for good performance, for staff morale, for the output, but essentially for service delivery, for growing the economy, for making sure that the city, with its employees, who are the core of service delivery, the core motive force driving service delivery, they can now be able to work in such a way that everybody is satisfied and they can put the city on a high pedestal of good service delivery.” Related video | Update on SAMWU protest and court case
