President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised to allocate funding for the recruitment of more teachers to help ease overcrowded classrooms . Ramaphosa was speaking on Thursday in Tongaat, north of Durban, where members of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) raised concerns about teacher vacancies, fair wages for Grade R teachers, and safety and security in schools. Addressing scores of teachers, Ramaphosa said government agreed with the concerns raised and committed to making budgetary provisions for the recruitment of more educators and medical doctors. “I get that very clearly and thank you for raising that. My wish this is a clear determination from my part our focus on education must be to appoint more teachers, to lessen the number of learners in the classroom so comrades watch the space we will address this matter.” Ramaphosa commended teachers in KwaZulu-Natal for their commitment to improving schools and education in the province. He was responding to a march led by SADTU, earlier this month, which saw thousands of teachers take to the streets of Durban’s central business district. Ramaphosa praised the teachers for their efforts to improve the quality of education. “I truly applaud you, but I also applaud you that you are committed teachers. With much that you have speaks about precisely that. You have a deep quest that the education challenges facing that are facing your province should be resolved but the children who are thought here today in KZN should be no different from children who are taught elsewhere in other provinces.” Related Video:
