The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape says it is concerned about the safety of its municipal representatives following the fatal shooting of the Mbhashe Councillor Ernest Fipaza. The 63-year-old councillor was shot and killed at his home in Bande near Dutywa on Friday night. A manhunt has since been launched for the suspects linked to the murder. SACP’s Ncumisa Kondlo District Chairman Siphelele Mateta says, “Now we are very much concerned about the lives of our representatives in municipalities, especially at this time of election.” Mateta says, “Police must act swiftly to put perpetrators in jail, and the justice system must deny these people bail, and they must be sentenced to long terms in jail. Councillors must feel safe in our communities without fear or favour and serve our communities.” PODCAST | Interview with Mateta on SAFM’s FirstTake programme:
