AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine to host maiden West Africa Mine rescue competition from November 2

AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine and Endeavour Mining will jointly host the 2026 West Africa Mine Rescue and Emergency Response Competition (WAMRERC) from November 2 to 6 in Obuasi, Ghana, in an initiative aimed at strengthening mine safety and emergency preparedness across the region. The five-day event, scheduled to take place at Bruno Park, will bring together mine rescue teams, emergency response professionals, government representatives, regulators, industry leaders and service providers from across West Africa. The competition is expected to provide a platform for participating teams to demonstrate their technical skills, test their emergency response capabilities and exchange knowledge on mine rescue, casualty management and operational resilience. According to the organisers, the initiative is intended to promote high standards in emergency response and strengthen collaboration among mining companies and other stakeholders in addressing safety risks associated with mining operations. WAMRERC 2026 draws inspiration from international events, including the International Mine Rescue Competition and the Toughest Firefighter Challenge, while incorporating technical rescue exercises relevant to the mining industry. Through practical simulations and technical challenges, participating teams will demonstrate their ability to respond to emergencies, manage casualties and protect lives in high-risk environments. Beyond the competition, the event is expected to support the development of mine rescue capabilities across West Africa by encouraging professional networking, knowledge-sharing and the adoption of effective emergency response practices. The joint hosting by AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine and Endeavour Mining also highlights the role of collaboration in strengthening safety standards and emergency response systems within the regional mining industry.
