The attempted murder trial of businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala and four others is expected to resume this Monday morning at the High Court in Johannesburg. Matlala is accused of orchestrating three failed assassination attempts targeting his former girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane, businessman Joe Sibanyoni and music producer Seunkie Mokubung, popularly known as DJ Vettys. The alleged assassination attempts occurred between August 2022 and January 2024. After a three-week recess, Matlala, his wife Tsakane and the two alleged hitmen, Musa Kekana and Tiego Mabusela , will return to the dock for the resumption of their trial. At this stage of the trial, the court is still hearing a “trial within a trial”, where Kekana is fighting to have the evidence obtained against him from his 2024 arrest for the alleged murder of Armand Swart deemed inadmissible in court. During their last appearance, the state accused Kekana of tailoring his evidence, saying that it had identified several discrepancies from his affidavits submitted during this trial within a trial, as compared to the submissions he made during his bail application in 2024.
