The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s newly appointed Deputy National Communications Director, Julius Kwame Anthony, has declared his full support for Dr Sammy Ayeh’s bid to become the party’s Deputy National Communications Officer, citing his dedication, hard work and commitment to the party. Mr Anthony, who says he has worked closely with Dr Ayeh, described him as a committed party communicator whose contribution to the NDC goes beyond verbal expressions of loyalty to what he called deliberate acts of sacrifice and service. He said Dr Ayeh had consistently demonstrated his commitment by making personal sacrifices, defending the party’s interests and taking positions on contentious issues, even when such decisions attracted criticism from some party members. “His commitment and love for the NDC is more than that. And that commitment and love for the NDC is not one that he only sits at home and tells me, ‘Oh, Julius, I love the NDC.’ It is a commitment that I have come to identify through deliberate acts of sacrifice, losing sleep, risking himself, you know, to represent the party,” he said. Mr Anthony added that Dr Ayeh had, on several occasions, prioritised the collective interest of the party over personal comfort and relationships. He said the presidential aide had demonstrated the temperament and composure required of someone seeking to occupy a key position in the NDC’s communications structure. According to him, Dr Ayeh regularly engages young party members and supporters who look to him and other young communicators for direction, guidance and responses to issues affecting the party. “Sammy Ayeh and I are contemporaries, almost age-mates, and we have people who identify with us, who call on a daily basis with one demand or the other. He unveils himself every day to these young people with the hope that we can hold the party together to preserve the mandate that has been given to President John Dramani Mahama,” he said. Mr Anthony noted that Dr Ayeh’s contribution to the NDC had been characterised by hard work, continuous learning and a willingness to learn from experienced communicators within the party. He specifically cited the influence of Sammy Gyamfi, the party’s former National Communications Officer, whom he described as an example of excellence in political communication. He said Dr Ayeh had deliberately studied and adopted aspects of Mr Gyamfi’s communication approach, adding that his ability to learn from established figures was an important asset. “He has demonstrated his love for the party by consciously emulating how Sammy Gyamfi goes about communication for the party,” Mr Anthony said. He further stressed that Dr Ayeh’s decision to contest for the Deputy National Communications Officer position should be welcomed, given the experience and qualities he had demonstrated. “Dr Sammy Ayeh putting himself forward to be Deputy Communications Officer of the NDC is something that nobody should resist. He has my full and unalloyed support,” he declared. Mr Anthony said his endorsement was based on Dr Ayeh’s record of service, his commitment to the party and his ability to accommodate differing views while protecting the collective interest of the NDC. Dr Ayeh’s political and professional background Dr Sammy Ayeh is a medical doctor and political communicator who currently serves as a Presidential Aide responsible for Communications at the Office of the President. He is also a board member of BOST Energies and a former board member of Ghana Post. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine degree from the University of Cape Coast and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Gold Coast. His involvement in NDC politics dates back to his student days at the University of Cape Coast, where he served first as Communications Officer and subsequently as President of the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) of the party. Those roles provided him with experience in student leadership, political communication, youth mobilisation and grassroots engagement. His work attracted the attention of Sammy Gyamfi, who brought him into the NDC’s National Communications Team. Dr Ayeh subsequently contributed to the party’s public engagement and communication activities. During the 2024 general election campaign, he served as the NDC’s Manifesto Spokesperson on Youth Development, helping to communicate the party’s proposals and commitments to young people. He is also described as having benefited from the mentorship of Mr Gyamfi and Felix Kwakye Ofosu, now Minister for Government Communications, with whom he has worked in political and government communication. Campaign focus In seeking the position of Deputy National Communications Officer, Dr Ayeh has outlined a commitment to strengthening research-driven political communication, empowering grassroots communicators and improving the party’s strategic media engagement. His campaign comes as the NDC prepares for its national executive elections, which will determine the party’s next set of national officers. Mr Anthony’s endorsement adds to the support for Dr Ayeh’s bid, with the newly appointed Deputy National Communications Director emphasising that the position requires not only communication skills but also patience, discipline and the ability to accommodate different interests within the party. He expressed confidence that Dr Ayeh possesses the temperament and calmness needed to contribute effectively to the NDC’s communications leadership.
