NAIROBI, Kenya, October 28, 2026 – Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor is expected to ring the changes for their FKF Premier League tie against Kakamega Homeboyz in Kakamega on Wednesday evening. The Ghanaian said he will give playing time to a number of fringe players who have not had much chance to play thus far. “This time around, maybe there will be one or two changes because the rest of the guys have played 90 minutes and above. And so we want to give, especially those who came in and did well, they did very well, so we want to give them a chance,” Akonnor said. The gaffer allayed fears that wholesale changes to the starting line-up will downgrade the level of quality of play for the champions, who have been peerless thus far in the new season. “As a team we know exactly what we are doing, what we have to do. We are not too worried in giving any other player the chance to play,” he said. The likes of ex-Ulinzi Stars marksman Paul Okoth, winger David ‘Messi’ Okoth, former Nairobi United midfielder Enock Machaka and Lewis Bandi could earn a starting berth in the midweek encounter. It remains to be seen whether Alpha Onyango, responsible for 50 per cent of K’Ogalo ‘s goals this season, will be retained in the starting XI. The former Kakamega High School alumnus is a man reborn, having struggled to make an impact for long stretches of last season. Wednesday’s match-up against Abana Ba Ingo presents a gilt-edged opportunity for Akonnor’s charges to tighten their grip on the league lead. Coach Edward Manoah’s side have proven a tough nut to crack for Gor at various times although, overall, the Green Army boast a superior head-to-head record. Of the 24 meetings between the two sides, Gor have won 14, Homeboyz triumphing thrice, with the rest ending in stalemates. Armed with these stats in their favour, ex-Homeboyz defender Sylvester Owino is clear-minded on what they need to do against his former employers. “We know that they are a tough team but even as we go to Kakamega, we want to come back with the three points,” the Harambee Stars centre back said. Owino, who has just returned from a three-month injury spell, could well be one of the names on Akonnor’s teamsheet. Homeboyz, who are sixth with four points, could just muddy the waters for K’Ogalo and hand a reality check to Akonnor and Co. Or, it could be another casualty of the juggernaut that is the ‘husband of teams.’
