President Cyril Ramaphosa has inspected the first phase of a state-led housing project and handed over homes to victims of the 2022 floods in KwaZulu-Natal. More than 440 people died in the disaster, while 4 000 homes were completely destroyed and more than 8 300 others were partially damaged. Roads, bridges, schools and supplies at the Durban port amongst others were also affected. A 62-year-old woman who lost loved ones in the floods received a new home as she continues to rebuild her life after the disaster. “Every time I look back on the 2022 floods, I am moved to tears. I always ask myself how I managed to survive such a disaster, especially with my three children, who were still very young at the time. I lost my home and all my belongings. I survived the floods with nothing, unable to salvage anything. The only thing that helped me get through that difficult time was joining other people who had also lost their homes and were being accommodated at the community hall.” Video: President Ramaphosa in KZN to inspect flood victims’ accommodation
