March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma says the police have no authority to stop the movement from protesting , arguing that their responsibility is to ensure public safety during demonstrations. She was speaking outside the Durban High Court, where March and March will oppose an application by the police and the Minister of Police for a final order to restrict the movement’s protest activities. Ngobese-Zuma insists that the movement has notified police ahead of every march, giving officers an opportunity to plan and prepare. She says the case will be a major test of the country’s constitutional right to protest, warning that the outcome could set an important precedent. “Because here we are having to deal with a Constitutional Court judgement in a Magistrates’ Court. And on top of that there’s also a Constitutional Court judgement that is still standing that the government has not challenged, but it goes against the will of the people. So it would be interesting to see how things turn out,” adds Ngobese-Zuma. – Reporting by Gcinokuhle Malinga Live stream:
