Acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia has initiated a process to appoint KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as Hawks head. Cachalia has submitted a memorandum for Cabinet’s approval. The position became vacant after the retirement of Godfrey Lebeya in May last year. Police Ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi says this appointment is intended to ensure leadership for the unit, which probes serious priority crimes, including organised crime and corruption. “The DPCI plays a critical role in South Africa’s fight against organized crime, corruption and other serious priority offences. This is a priority for the police reset agenda. The appointment of a national head is important in ensuring strong leadership, strategic direction and operational effectiveness in addressing these crimes.” Video: Some people would not support Gen Mkhwanazi’s appointment as new Hawks head: Prof Mpho Matlala
