The trial of 10 people accused in alleged insurance killings has been postponed to the 25th of January 2027 by the High Court in Polokwane, Limpopo. This is to allow six of the accused to secure legal representation. Former police sergeant Rachel Kutumela and her co-accused allegedly killed nine people and claimed about R10 million in insurance payouts. The accused face 54 charges, including murder, fraud and money laundering. The court heard that Rachel Kutumela, Anna Shokane, Johannes Shokane, Benedictor Mataba and Martha Ruiters have still not secured legal representation from the Legal Aid Board. The trial was initially postponed on the 5th of October for the same reason. Accused number four, Johannes Shokane, has been referred for mental evaluation. The court has also relaxed accused number 10 Martha Ruiters’ bail conditions, after she complained of walking long distances to report to a local police station in Sebokeng, in Gauteng. She was initially instructed to report four times per week.
