Ebola is crossing borders and Africa must move faster with stronger coordination. That’s the word from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director-General, Dr Jean Kaseya. The CDC alongside African health ministers held a virtual meeting as the disease poses an escalating threat to health security across the continent. Cases have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Nigeria. The Africa CDC has called on all member states to strengthen vigilance, surveillance, cross border cooperation and protection of frontline health workers. Since the disease was declared a public health emergency of continental security, African countries have made sustained efforts to contain transmission. The African health body has warned that the evolving situation calls for renewed political commitment and stronger continental solidarity. Dr Kaseya says the continent does have the expertise and capacity to stop the disease outbreak and save lives. Meanwhile, Nigeria reported its first Ebola case in more than a decade last week.
