Sentencing proceedings for convicted murderer Bafana Mahungela have been postponed to November 23 by the High Court in Johannesburg. The matter could not proceed on Tuesday as the Presiding Judge was unavailable. The State also indicated that the pre-sentence report was not ready. Mahungela has been found guilty of murder, kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted rape in connection with the 2023 murder of Kirsten Kluyts. He attacked and killed Delta Park High School teacher Kirsten Kluyts while she was participating in a race in the north of Johannesburg. CCTV footage and other evidence linked him to the offences. Mahungela made a brief appearance in court, where his matter was postponed: The court found that Kluyts had been intentionally killed and that her belongings had been deliberately concealed in an attempt to hinder the investigation. The presiding judge was unavailable to hear the matter and had also not finalised the pre-sentence report.
