The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has raised concerns about the state of water provision and quality of water in the country, especially in the City of Tshwane. This comes after 833 people recently contracted gastrointestinal illness in Bronkhorstspruit due to suspected water contamination. SAHRC Commissioner Henk Boshoff says politicians are more concerned about internal squabbles while neglecting people. “The Human Rights Commission is obviously very concerned about the state of water provision in South Africa and the quality of water provision in South Africa especially in Tshwane. For me unfortunately, councillors in that municipality in the City of Tshwane are more concerned about internal political squabbles and battles and they neglect the rights of residents to have access to sufficient water.” The commission has since described the water crisis in Bronkhorstspruit in as a serious violation of basic human rights. It says municipalities and water services authorities are among the biggest culprits in failing to provide adequate water and sanitation services. Meanwhile, the Department of Water and Sanitation says it is taking strict enforcement action against municipalities failing to comply with water quality and licensing regulations.
